I have an 8 year old daughter diagnosed with PDS-Nos. High functioning, mainstreamed in school without an aide, who is showing signs of precosious puberty. After testing they may recommend a monthly shot called Lupron to slow down development. I am looking for any parent who may be in the same situation and their thoughts on this matter. Thank You

My daughter was showing some signs of precious puberty at 5 and had autism. We repressed puberty with drugs and encourage bone growth with growth hormone. When she was 8 we started to repress puberty and when she was 9 she started on growth hormone. If we had not her adult height would have been around 4'9", when it was predicted to 5'5". She would have also started her period around age 10. She didn't need anything else to set her apart from others since she already had autism. Girls that reach puberty early are at higher risk than their peers for sexual harassment and abuse.

That brings into play one of the great markers of Autism-A.S of the ability to maintain eye contact. It is in fact an issue that is directly contact to the level of testosterone in a person-i.e why so many males are affectedve females. Reaching that stage in life changes the format of autism. So on one hand it is good to put a stop to it but on the other hand what is the effect it has in the development of Autism. (2) Sex is extremely important to over loading A.S people over problems of emotion. The great issue is dealing with it in effect as an on-off switch might make the autistic problems worse since you stop it in the middle of going on. As such when you turn the switch back on all the work and effort that you putyour child though make have been for nothing. The great diservice that doctors do is to maake autism have a constant value of 1. Not until the middle 20s does it really become stable.

Hello! I am not in the same situation (my little guy is only 4), but I have known other parents in my mentoring circle who have been. I have heard very little concerns regarding side effects from the drugs that are used to slow development, which is always a relief for parents to hear. And from what I've heard, most parents I know who have gone down this road prefer slowing down the development process to dealing with the emotions and fallout that come with teasing at school. I mean, let's face it; this is an age where kids are at their cruelest. Any kiddo that sticks out will be a prime target for teasing and ostracizing. I'm sure that you, as a parent, put enormous energy into making sure your child has the confidence and positive self-image needed to succeed in an educational setting. But spectrum issues are spectrum issues, and that usually means social skills are affected one way or another. Although kids with high-functioning spectrum issues can be quite successful academically and otherwise, some differences remain. The older the child, the more noticable they become. What these other parents have told me, in a nutshell, is : "She stands out from the crowd enough anyway because of her social deficits. Why would I allow this to call even more attention to her, if it's going to be negative? She has enough on her plate to deal with already." You sound like a proactive parent. If you've made sure that your child has plenty of opportunities to shine where she does best, and be around positive peers who accept her for who she is, that may be enough. But if you have any worries about her rapid development affecting her self-esteem, which might indirectly throw a wrench into every other area of her life, I would research the medical recommendation. If it seems safe, it may be the best way to keep a good thing from going south. She has done a tremendous amount of work (and so have you!) getting to where she is today. This could be the key to preventing a severe imbalance in her world as she knows it.

I was given Lupron injections once a month, for three months to shrink fibroid tumors. The side effects were similar to that of menopause - hot flashes, insomnia, and weight gain. Please be informed of the side effects before giving these monthly injections to your young daughter.

Hi, I have a student in my classroom who is presently taking this drug and has been taking it since she was 6yr.(now 9yr.) Mom said that she will discontinue the drug when she is 12yr. old. She was told that her daughter if she had not taken the drug would have matured and grown to her fullest by the time she was 12yr. Puberty is a difficult time for children with autism. I have done a great deal of research and have spoken at parent groups about this topic. If you have questions or concerns I would be happy to help. I wish you well. Feel free to email me. Sincerely, Lori Martin

Similar to Ms. Hogan, I also had a single lupron shot to shrink fibroid tumors and stop periods before a hysterectomy. The side effects for me were large cysts in my breasts, which had to be drained because they were painful when using an auto seatbelt with the shoulder strap. Two or three times I went to the breast center to have several cysts drained each time. The single shot costs $600+ dollars, which my insurance co. covered. So I second Ms. Hogan's recommendation to ask about side effects bot immediate and long-term.

We have a 12 year old AS daughter who is in the beginning of soma hard puberty issues. For her it's not only a great embarassment, but we fear that since she is so emotionally vunerable that she will somehow get taken advantage of and become pregnant. How do we handle this? It seems to be one of those subjects that she can't grasp and she always seems do desperate to make friends that we are afraid she is a prime target for something really negative to happen. What can we do? Thanks- Deanna

I have recently begun lupron shots on my 13 year old developementally delayed son. This was recommended by our DAN doctor after she saw big improvements in her own child. This protocol has been developed by a Dr. Mark Geier and is to supposed to help lower testosterone levels before chelating with DMSA. Apparently DMSA chelation isn't too effective with high testosterone levels. Dr. Geier's video presentation is available on Google by highlighting video and typing in the search line David and Mark Geier for anyone that wants to watch. If anyone out there has had success with this please feel free to contact me via e-mail thanks Mark Premo

If I may, I would STRONGLY suggest obtaining a second opinion before deciding whether or not these shots are the best course of action for your child. I am nearing the end of a six-month course of monthly Lupron injections for severe endometriosis. The side effects from these shots are not pleasant: hot flashes, moodiness, weight gain, persistent acid reflux, especially recently, and insomnia. As someone with a young autistic child in the family, I implore you to think long and hard about how these side effects will affect your child, especially if they don't fully comprehend why they are taking these shots.

My son is 10 and is diagnosed with PDD. He is currently on Humatrope growth hormone because he is growth hormone deficient. He is starting the early signs of puberty and the doctor is talking about starting him on Lupron injections to stop puberty so that he will grow properly. My 15 yr old boy with PDD NOS, is not very verbal and is going through puberty. We are having issues with erections occuring at the wrong times and self stimulation. I don't know what to do but discourage this harshly as he simply does not appear to know that there is a time and place for everything. Does anyone have ideas on how to cope with this?

Parents of children with Precosious Puberty. Nov. 2006 I posted a request on this website for any information pertaining to Lupron and Precosious Puberty. Since then we have started the Lupron shots for my 9 year old daughter. She is definitely moving into the puberty stage with hair on her privates, body odor and breast development. We are about to have her 6th shot. Two months ago her dosage had to be increased because the amount she was given was not supressing it enough. My advice to parents would be to make an appt. with a endocronologists and get information on what is happening to your child. What are your options and go from there. You as a parent know your child. There maturity and if they are ready to deal with changes in their bodies. If not, find out your options. We did not want to put our daughter thru the shots but knew that her getting her menstral was not an option. Best to all.

She is high functioning and I have told her what, why, whens about all this but I am not sure that she fully comprehends it. I been trying to get a doctor in conservative Colorado to give my nonverbal son with autism Lupron shots sense he was 9 years old. The arrogant jerks refused. I been falsely accused of child sexual abuse when he was 9 years old in district 70 Pueblo West. My son is now 11 years old. It is appalling to see his penis hard with all that pubic hair around and I have no control. I cant talk to any so called professionals here in Colorado because there is none! If I cant find Lupron over the black market I am definatly placing him on salt peter potasium nitrate. I wished to move out of a red state someday but all have to do it on my own because my husband only cares about his job. Until then I dont care how anyone judges me because I will find something on my own to suppress my sons sexual needs!

I am the mothe rof an 18 year old girl who presented at age 2 with pubic hair~luckily this form of precosious puberty was benign, meaning external changes only. she was monitored until she started showing signs of external changes and then, at age 8, took lupron shots to prevent menstruation and also to give her added years of slow bone growth. I am happy to report that at age 18, she has attained a normal height, and began menstration at a normal time, avoiding all the social and emotional issues that come along with precosious puberty. at the time, her shots were $1200 per month, and we got them covered under major medical (thank god), but had to travel 100 miles each way to see a pediatric endocrinologist. We have yet to see any long term negative side effects of the Lupron on her, and pray that it stays that way~ to all of you dealing with autism on top of endocrine problems, i can't imagine your challenges~stay informed, and may god bless you!

My daughter has been diagnosed with Precocious Puberty at age 7 and we are considering Lupron injections until she is 9 or 10 yrs old. Did you daughter have any side effects? I have heard that some women have the side effects of menopause and wondered if that would also apply to children.

I have the opposite issue with my son who is taking a growth hormone because he does not create this hormone which occurs naturally in typical children. He started taking nutropin about three years ago. We took a break and now are back on it. I am noticing more agitation than normal more scratching and just an over all uneasiness. Has anyone seen these side effects after taking this medicine? My husband wants to give it a month before we decide to take him off. I just hate seeing my son so uncomfortable. Any input is greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Eve

Sigh... Where do I start? Recently my significant other's ex wife suggested that she was going to have their 9yo autistic daughter get a hysterectomy because of the same reasons you all have stated here for your children taking Lupron. I was appalled. How can it be determined right now that she is some sort of damaged goods that will never have a chance at being "normal"? We sit here and watch her pump that child full of every type of herbal suppliment and who knows what in the name of being a good parent. The ammount of medicine that little girl has to take would put any old man with diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol (ect ect ect) to shame. She swears that this precious little girl is severely mentally retarded and will have to live with her forever. Is all this craziness necessary? My son is autistic and started his childhood in much the same way as she did. The difference is that he has been diagnosed at age 11 and her at 3. It has been on a tough road that I have travelled with him... not understanding what he was doing and why or even how to help... But, through all that time I was just patient and loving with him and still held him to the standards and expectations people have for their "normal" children. No medication. No diet restrictions. Just teaching him what is wrong and what is right and how to deal with things as they come along in a way he can understand. He was non-verbal for the longest time. He couldnt read until a few years ago. How was it that he could all of a sudden develope like that without the aid of all these things that people have decided these children "need" to "cure" them? My so's little girl is spoiled. Why do anything if nobody thinks you can and treats you like an invalid and does everything for you? She isnt a poor sick little girl. I can see it. and btw.. we are also looking into the fact that I may be living with Aspergers myself. I also started puberty and had my period at the age of 10 yet I am a fully functioning 5'7" happy adult woman. I hate to see all this happen to her.
